What is Omeprazole and what is it used for?
Omeprazole is a widely used medication to treat indigestion, heartburn and acid reflux. It belongs to a group of medications called ‘proton-pump inhibitors’ which works by reducing the amount of acid your stomach makes.
How and when do I take Omeprazole?
Adults should take one 20mg capsule with water, preferably first thing in the morning for four weeks. If you are prescribed to take Omeprazole twice a day, it is recommended to take 1 dose in the morning, and 1 dose in the evening.
It is important not to chew the capsule because it will not work properly otherwise.
Can I take Omeprazole?
Omeprazole can be taken by children and babies if it has been prescribed by the doctor. Adults including those that are pregnant and breast feeding are able to take it.
Omeprazole contraindications – There are some instances where omeprazole is not suitable for people to take. You should tell your doctor if you:
- Are deficient in vitamin B12
- Are allergic to protein pump inhibitors
- Have ever had liver disease
What dosage should I take?
Omeprazole is a prescription medication coming in 3 different dosage levels: 10mg, 20mg and 40mg.
The dosage level will depend on what the doctor recommends for you and the severity of the condition. Currently we only supply the 20mg dosage of Omeprazole, if your symtoms require a higher strength treatment it is recommended to see your GP for further advice.
How long should I take it for?
If you bought Omeprazole over the counter and have not seen any improvements in health within 2 weeks, it is best to consult with your doctor. They may want to carry out some tests to see what is causing your symptoms or suggest an alternative medication.
Everybody responds differently to the medication and depending on your illness and the reason for taking Omeprazole, it could take from a few weeks to a few months. It is best to consult with your doctor about what is best for you.
What if I forget to take it?
If you usually take it once a day: Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is within 12 hours of your next dose then skip the dose.
If you take it twice a day: Take the missed dose unless it is within 4 hours of your next dose.
What if I take too much?
If you accidentally exceed the recommended dosage by taking 1 or 2 extra doses, it is unlikely that it will cause problems.
Consult a doctor if you start suffering from any of these symptoms:
- Flushed skin
- Feel sweaty
- Blurred vision
- Feeling confused/agitated
- Quicker heartbeat
- Feel sleepy
Can I take Omeprazole with alcohol?
Whilst alcohol does not interact with Omeprazole, alcohol can cause acid reflux. If you wish to drink alcohol, we would recommend you do so in moderation. If you suffer dizziness from taking Omeprazole, then drinking alcohol is likely to make it worse.
Can I take Omeprazole whilst I’m pregnant or breast feeding?
It is not known if Omeprazole has any negative effects when used during pregnancy or breastfeeding, but with all medication, it is best to seek medical advice from your doctor first.

What is Losec?
Losec is the brand name for Omeprazole. They work in the same way as Omeprazole and contain the same quantity of the active ingredient, Omeprazole but Losec is more expensive as it is the ‘branded’ version.
