What is Folic Acid?
Folic acid is the man-made substitute for the vitamin folate (Vitamin B9). It’s most commonly taken to help with the normal development of an unborn baby's brain, skull and spinal cord, to avoid defects such as spina bifida (a neural tube defect causing a gap in the spine).
What are the benefits of Folic Acid?
- Aiding the normal development of the brain, skull and spinal cord in unborn babies
- Treating or preventing folate-deficiency anaemia
- Helps to reduce side effects from methotrexate, used in the treatment of severe arthritis, Crohn’s disease and psoriasis
- Improving cell division and normal red blood cell formation
How do I take Folic Acid?
Take one tablet per day with food or liquid.
To aid during pregnancy, take folic acid a few months before you conceive until the end of your first trimester (12 weeks).
Do not take if you:
- Have had an allergic reaction to folic acid
- Have low vitamin b12 levels
- Have cancer (unless you also have folate deficiency anaemia)
- Are having haemodialysis (a type of kidney dialysis)
- Have a stent in your heart
