mounjaro pen

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is an injectable weight loss pen that is approved by the UK Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA) as a safe and effective weight loss treatment. As a dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist, the treatment is very effective in aiding weight loss by helping control appetite, slowing gastric emptying and reducing food cravings.

However, it is important to understand the correct Mounjaro dosage to ensure you get the best results from your treatment and reduce the risk of potential side effects. We’ve therefore written this guide to cover everything you need to know about Mounjaro dosing.

Understanding Mounjaro dosing

Mounjaro follows a carefully structured dosing schedule designed to help your body gradually adjust to the medication. The treatment begins with a low starting dose that is then increased over time.

Mounjaro is available in the following dosages:

  • Mounjaro 2.5 mg (starting dose)
  • Mounjaro 5 mg (step-up dose)
  • Mounjaro 7.5 mg (step-up dose)
  • Mounjaro 10 mg (step-up dose)
  • Mounjaro 12.5 mg (step-up dose)
  • Mounjaro 15 mg (maintenance dose)

Mounjaro 2.5 mg (weeks 1-4): Patients begin the treatment course with a 2.5mg dose that is administered once a week as a subcutaneous injection (into the skin), which should be taken from weeks 1-4. This dose is suitable for individuals who have never taken Mounjaro, allowing the individual’s digestive system to adapt to the medication's effects.

If the individual taking Mounjaro does not experience any severe side effects from taking the 2.5 mg dose after weeks 1-4, they should switch to a higher dose of Mounjaro 5 mg to continue with their weight loss treatment.

Mounjaro 5 mg (weeks 5-8): Mounjaro 5 mg is prescribed for individuals who have not experienced any severe side effects from taking the starting dose of Mounjaro 2.5 mg during weeks 1-4. Mounjaro 5 mg is typically taken during weeks 5-8.

Patients often begin to experience reduced appetite and initial weight loss during this phase. It is also common to experience mild gastrointestinal side effects like vomiting or diarrhoea as you adjust to the treatment.

If the individual taking Mounjaro does not experience any severe side effects from taking the 5 mg dose after weeks 5-8, they should switch to the higher dose of Mounjaro 7.5 mg to continue with their weight loss treatment.

Mounjaro 7.5 mg (weeks 9-12): Mounjaro 7.5 mg is prescribed for individuals who have not experienced any severe side effects from taking Mounjaro 5 mg during weeks 5-8. Mounjaro 7.5 mg is typically taken during weeks 9-12.

If the individual taking Mounjaro does not experience any severe side effects from taking the 7.5 mg dose after weeks 9-12, they should switch to a higher dose of 10 mg to continue with their weight loss treatment.

Mounjaro 10 mg (weeks 13-16): Mounjaro 10 mg is prescribed for individuals who have not experienced any severe side effects from taking Mounjaro 7.5 mg during weeks 9-12. Mounjaro 10 mg is typically taken during weeks 13-16.

If the individual taking Mounjaro does not experience any severe side effects from taking the 10 mg dose after weeks 13-16, they should switch to a higher dose of Mounjaro 12.5 mg to continue with their weight loss treatment.

Mounjaro 12.5 mg (weeks 17-20): Mounjaro 12.5 mg is prescribed for individuals who have not experienced any severe side effects from taking Mounjaro 10 mg during weeks 13-16. Mounjaro 12.5 mg is typically taken during weeks 17-20.

If the individual taking Mounjaro does not experience any severe side effects from taking the 12.5 mg dose after weeks 17-20, they should switch to a higher dose of Mounjaro 15 mg to continue with their weight loss treatment.

Mounjaro 15 mg (weeks 21+): Mounjaro 15 mg is the maximum therapeutic dose that is prescribed for individuals who have not experienced any severe side effects from taking Mounjaro 12.5 mg during weeks 17-20. Patients typically remain on this dose for the duration of their treatment, where the exact time frame is determined by the prescriber.

What to do if you miss a dose

  • If it has been 4 days or less since your missed scheduled dose, take Mounjaro as soon as you remember.
  • If it has been more than 4 days since your missed scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and inject your next dose as usual on your scheduled day.
