Many men that suffer from erectile dysfunction (ED) often feel embarrassed visiting their GP to seek treatment. According to the Mirror, a survey revealed that a third of men between 18-60 have not told anyone about their ED problems and only 28% of men have visited to their GP.

Men who don’t seek proper treatment will instead take to the internet to find medications online without a prescription and obtain false information. This has led to many myths about ED, but we’re here to set the facts straight. We’ve debunked the most common myths surrounding ED:

Myth #1: ED only happens in older men

Although it is true that ED more commonly occurs in older men, however statistics from 2018 have reported that half of men in their 30’s have ED issues.

Myth #2: All ED medications are the same

ED medications such as Viagra, Cialis, Spedra are all part of the same class of drugs – PDE5 inhibitors. They all work in the same way, where the muscles are relaxed, increasing the blood flow into the penis, thus helping men achieving and maintaining an erection. However, there are small differences in how quick they take to work and how long they are effective in the body. For example, Viagra takes up to 60 minutes to take effect and the effects last up to 6 hours whereas for Cialis the effects will last up to 36 hours.

Myth #3: It’s all in your head

ED is commonly caused by existing medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and from certain medications. However, in some cases it can also arise due to psychological causes such as stress, depression and anxiety. Being told that your ED is all in your head if the cause of your ED is psychological by nature is likely to make it worse. In many cases, it can be a combination of both physical and psychological causes.

Myth #4: My lifestyle won’t affect my ED

Leading an unhealthy lifestyle, such as smoking or excessively drinking alcohol may cause ED. For example, the tobacco in cigarettes is a known vasoconstrictor which the narrowing of blood vessels which will restrict the blood flow to the penis. Not only this but being obese and being inactive will also contribute to ED. This is because regular exercise will improve your overall health and can help manage stress and depression.

For the ED medications such as Viagra to work effectively, it needs to be taken properly and before changing to a different ED medication, it is recommended that you try it on eight separate occasions.

Myth #5: Natural remedies will work

Men will try alternatives such as natural remedies, or herbal supplements to cure their ED as they may feel embarrassed going to the GP to seek treatment. Pomegranate juice, red ginseng and L-arginine have shown small results improving ED. However, there is not enough evidence to suggest that these supplements are effective as being a treatment for ED. They have also been associated with having unpleasant side effects.

Myth #6: If it doesn't work first time, it wont ever work

Men will often seek treatments such as Viagra, Cialis or Spedra which will help with their ED problems. They will stop using the treatments if they feel it didn’t work for them if they didn’t see any results after the first try. There are several factors which may affect the efficacy of the ED medications, including:

  • How much food or alcohol has been consumed?
  • How long you have waited before having sexual intercourse.
  • Whether you are sexually aroused.
