What is Canesten Pessary?
Canesten Pessary is a small tablet containing 500mg of the antifungal medicine clotrimazole. It is a single-dose treatment that is designed to be inserted into the vagina using the applicator provided, where it dissolves and delivers the medicine directly to the site of the infection to treat vaginal thrush (vaginal candidiasis).
How to use a Canesten Pessary
Remove the pessary from its foil packaging. Pull out the plunger of the applicator until it stops, then firmly place the pessary into the end of the applicator. Lay on your back with your knees bent, gently insert the applicator into the vagina as far as it is comfortable and press the plunger to release the pessary. It is usually best to insert the pessary at bedtime, as lying down helps the pessary remain in place as it dissolves. Wash your hands before and after use.
How do I know if Canesten Pessary is working?
It is normal for symptoms to take one to three days to begin improving after inserting the Canesten Pessary. You may notice a gradual reduction in itching, soreness and discharge over the following days.
The pessary dissolves inside the vagina, and it is common to notice a chalky or white residue in your underwear for a day or two after treatment. This is a normal part of the treatment and indicates that the pessary has dissolved as expected. If symptoms do not improve within seven days, or if they worsen, consult your GP.
Canesten Pessary chalky discharge: How long does it last?
A white or chalky discharge following the use of Canesten Pessary is normal and typically lasts for one to three days. This discharge consists of the dissolved pessary base being expelled from the vagina. It does not mean the treatment has not worked. Wearing a panty liner during this time can help manage any residue. If the discharge has an unusual colour or odour, or if it continues beyond three days, consult your GP.
How long does a Canesten Pessary take to dissolve?
The pessary typically dissolves overnight. This is why it is recommended to insert the pessary at bedtime, so that the medicine has time to dissolve and be absorbed whilst you are lying down. Some of the dissolved pessary may be expelled as a chalky white discharge the following morning, which is normal.
Can I pee after inserting Canesten Pessary?
Yes. The pessary is inserted into the vagina, whilst urine is passed from the urethra, which is a separate opening. Urinating will not dislodge or affect the pessary. However, try to avoid inserting the pessary immediately before getting up to use the bathroom, as remaining lying down helps the pessary stay in position as it dissolves.
Why am I bleeding after using Canesten Pessary?
Light spotting after inserting a pessary can occasionally occur and is usually caused by minor irritation to the vaginal wall during insertion, particularly if the tissue is already inflamed from the thrush infection. This is generally not a cause for concern and should resolve quickly. However, if bleeding is heavy, persistent or accompanied by pain, consult your GP as soon as possible.
Can I use Canesten Thrush Pessary and Canesten External Cream together?
Yes, you can use Canesten Thrush Pessary at the same time as Canesten External Cream 1%. The pessary will fight the infection from within, while the cream can be applied externally in order to provide relief from itching.
