Daktarin Oral Gel is one of the most widely used treatments for fungal infections in the mouth, and knowing how to use Daktarin Oral Gel correctly, including the right dose, timing and how long to continue for, makes a difference to how well it works.

What is Daktarin Oral Gel?
Daktarin Oral Gel is a sugar free antifungal gel containing miconazole, an antifungal medicine that damages the cell membrane of the fungus causing the infection, stopping it multiplying so the infection can clear.1 It's licensed to treat fungal infections of the mouth and throat, most commonly oral thrush (oral candidiasis), in adults, children and infants from 4 months of age.1 It's available as a pharmacist-only (P) medicine, so you don't need a GP prescription, though a pharmacist will ask a few questions to check it's suitable for you.
Oral thrush develops when Candida, a yeast that lives harmlessly in most people's mouths, grows out of control. Common triggers include a recent course of antibiotics, an inhaled steroid used for asthma or COPD, wearing dentures, a dry mouth, or a weakened immune system.3 It typically causes creamy white patches on the tongue, cheeks or roof of the mouth, along with soreness and sometimes a change in taste. An important reminder - the treatments differ depending on whether you have oral or vaginal thrush, so a treatment for one shouldn't be used on the other.
How to use Daktarin Oral Gel
Applying the gel properly matters just as much as getting the dose right. Here's how to use Daktarin Oral Gel correctly:
- Wash your hands before applying the gel.
- Apply a small amount directly to the affected areas inside the mouth using a clean finger.
- Keep the gel in contact with the sore area for as long as possible. Do not swallow it straight away, though swallowing it afterwards isn't harmful.
- Use the gel after meals, four times a day, unless a doctor or pharmacist has told you otherwise.
- If you wear dentures, take them out at bedtime and rub the gel over them too, which helps stop the infection spreading back once you've finished treatment.2
The dose depends on age:
- Adults and children aged 2 years and over - 2.5ml of gel (half a 5ml measuring spoon) applied four times a day after food.
- Infants aged 4 months to 2 years - 1.25ml of gel (a quarter of a 5ml measuring spoon) applied four times a day after food, given in small portions and placed at the front of the mouth rather than the back of the throat to reduce the risk of choking.2
Daktarin Oral Gel should not be used in babies under 4 months old because of the choking risk, and extra care is needed for infants aged 4 to 6 months who were born prematurely or have slower development, so check with a doctor first in these cases.1
If you forget a dose, do not apply the missed dose. Just carry on with the next dose as normal, and do not use a double amount to make up for it.2

Who shouldn't use Daktarin Oral Gel?
Daktarin Oral Gel isn't suitable for everyone. Do not use it if you:
- Are allergic to miconazole, other imidazole antifungal medicines, or any of the gel's other ingredients
- Have liver problems
- Are treating a baby under 4 months old1
Checking for interactions matters too. Daktarin Oral Gel must not be used alongside warfarin or other blood thinning medicines without medical supervision. Even though the gel is applied in the mouth, enough miconazole can be absorbed to affect how these medicines work, and serious bleeding events, some of them fatal, have been reported.1
It also must not be combined with certain statins such as simvastatin or lovastatin, some antihistamines, medicines for heart rhythm problems, or ergotamine used for migraine, among others.1 It can increase the risk of low blood sugar in people taking certain diabetes tablets (sulphonylureas), and levels of some epilepsy medicines may need monitoring alongside it.1 Tell your pharmacist or doctor about every other medicine you take, including anything bought over the counter or any herbal remedies, before you start.
If you're pregnant, or think you might be, speak to a doctor before using Daktarin Oral Gel, as it's generally avoided in pregnancy unless a doctor feels it's needed.2 If you're breastfeeding, ask a doctor for advice too, and do not apply the gel to your nipple as a way of treating your baby's thrush.2
What are the side effects of Daktarin Oral Gel?
Like all medicines, Daktarin Oral Gel can cause side effects, although most people tolerate it well.
- Dry mouth, nausea or vomiting - common, affecting up to 10 in every 100 people, and usually mild.
- Changed or unusual taste - common, taste is occasionally lost altogether for a short time.
- Mouth discomfort or regurgitation - common, particularly in the first few days.
- Diarrhoea or a sore mouth - reported less often.1
Stop using the gel and get medical help straight away if you notice signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, or hives, or if you develop a severe skin reaction with blistering or peeling.1 If you're taking warfarin, watch for unexplained bruising or bleeding, nosebleeds, or black stools, and stop the gel and seek advice straight away if these occur.1
Preventing oral thrush coming back
Once the infection has cleared, a few habits reduce the chances of it returning:
- Rinse your mouth with water after using a steroid inhaler, and ask about using a spacer device
- Keep any underlying condition, such as diabetes, well controlled
- Clean dentures daily and remove them overnight rather than leaving them in
