What is Ibuprofen?

Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) taken for fast-acting relief from mild to moderate pain. Ibuprofen can also be taken to reduce swelling and inflammation. Ibuprofen offers effective pain relief from a range of conditions and symptoms such as; period pain, migraine and headaches, back pain, tooth pain, muscle pains and joint conditions (arthritis).

What is Ibuprofen used for?

Ibuprofen is used to provide effective pain relief from a wide range of aches, pains and conditions, such us:

  • Migraine and headaches
  • Back pain
  • Period pain and cramps
  • Tooth pain
  • Muscle pain
  • Joint pain
  • Arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Fever

How does Ibuprofen work?

Ibuprofen works by providing pain relief at the site of the pain rather than taking effect on the nervous system like other pain relief medications. Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication which works to reduce the activity of specific enzymes (cyclo-oxygenase enzymes) responsible for producing chemical compounds called prostaglandins in the body. Prostaglandins are responsible for causing pain and inflammation. Ibuprofen works by reducing or preventing this chain reaction, which decreases the production of prostaglandins at the site of discomfort which in turn helps to decrease localised inflammation and pain.

How do I use Ibuprofen?

Take Ibuprofen orally with a glass of water with or just after a meal. This is necessary to reduce stomach irritation.

Who should not take Ibuprofen?

Do not take Ibuprofen tablets if you:

  • Have or have had a stomach ulcer, perforation or bleeding of the stomach
  • Are allergic to ibuprofen, aspirin or any other painkiller; or to any of the other ingredients
  • Have kidney, heart or liver disease
  • If you are elderly
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Talk to your doctor before taking ibuprofen if you:

  • Have asthma or allergies
  • Have stomach or bowel disorders
  • Have Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)
  • Have high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol
  • Have a family history of heart disease or stroke

What dose of Ibuprofen should I take?

It is important to follow the guidance given by your doctor or pharmacist when taking Ibuprofen.

For adults (>40kg body mass) in the treatment of persistent mild to moderate pain, 1-2 tablets taken 3-4 times a day with an interval of 6 hours in between each dose is recommended. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 1200mg (6 tablets). You should not exceed 800mg in a single dose.

For further guidance on the recommended dose of Ibuprofen for specific conditions or symptoms, consult a doctor or pharmacist. It is always important to read and seek further guidance from the patient information leaflet.

 Information Leaflet

Always read the patient information leaflet before commencing treatment.

Important: We advise you to always read the patient information leaflet inside the medication box, as the generic medication may not always entirely match the patient information leaflet listed. Please contact us if you have any questions.
