What is Warticon?

Warticon is a safe and effective topical prescription cream and solution which contains the active ingredient podophyllotoxin, which is used to treat genital warts caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Warticon is suitable for use by both men and women, it can be applied directly to the warts on the affected genital area (on or around the penis or vagina). The active ingredient is an antiviral medicine which is effective at targeting and eradicating HPV, causing the wart cells to die.

How does Warticon treat genital warts?

Warticon cream is an antiviral medication that effectively treats genital warts by attacking the human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is responsible for causing the outbreak of genital warts but also keeping the genital wart cells alive. The active ingredient in Warticon cream, a powerful antiviral plant extract called podophyllotoxin, prevents the virus from developing and spreading. Following continued Warticon cream use, the HPV virus can be eradicated and genital warts cleared.

What are the benefits of Warticon in treating genital warts?

Following correct use, Warticon can offer highly effective results in the treatment of genital warts. The benefits of using Warticon are evident:

  • Genital warts can be cleared within a matter of weeks.
  • Warticon is one of the quickest treatments available to clear genital warts.
  • It’s easy and practical to apply Warticon cream and solution.
  • Unlike other treatments, you don’t have to wait before washing Warticon off.

How to apply Warticon cream

Application instructions

  1. Before you apply Warticon cream, make sure you wash and dry the affected area.
  2. Apply the Warticon cream to each genital wart using your finger.
  3. Once each genital wart is covered, allow the cream to dry.
  4. Following Warticon cream use, wash your hands thoroughly.

Apply Warticon cream to the affected area(s) twice a day, 12 hours apart (once in the morning and once in the evening) for 3 consecutive days. For the next 4 days, do not apply Warticon cream. Repeat this routine for the next 4 weeks and observe the results.

How to apply Warticon solution

  1. Before you apply Warticon solution, make sure you wash and dry the affected area.
  2. Use a new applicator each time you apply Warticon solution.
  3. Dip the ‘Loop’ end of the applicator into the Warticon Solution. Use the ‘spatula’ end of the applicator if you have lots of warts in a small area or a large wart.
  4. Apply the Warticon solution until it just covers the intended warts and allow it to dry. Be careful not to get any Warticon solution on healthy skin. If this does happen, wash the area with warm, soapy water.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 and apply Warticon solution to each wart. Allow skin treated with Warticon solution to dry before allowing other healthy skin to touch the affected area.
  6. Following Warticon solution use, wash your hands thoroughly. Ensure the lid is screwed on tightly.

Is there anything I should know before using Warticon cream or solution?

  • Avoid getting Warticon cream or solution on open cuts, wounds or healthy skin.
  • Avoid unprotected sexual activity following immediate application to avoid unwanted irritative effects for your partner.
  • Warticon cream is white and disappears once it’s soaked in, following application. Warticon solution is blue and may cause the application area to turn blue throughout treatment.
  • Warticon solution is highly flammable. Keep your body away from fire following application of the medicine.

Which Warticon treatment is most effective? Warticon cream or Warticon solution?

Warticon 0.15% cream and Warticon 0.5% solution both contain the active ingredient Podophyllotoxin. Research comparing Podophyllotoxin 0.15% cream and Podophyllotoxin 0.5% solution found that they both have very similar levels of efficacy in the treatment of genital warts. However, research does suggest that Podophyllotoxin 0.5% solution may have a marginally greater level of efficacy compared to Podophyllotoxin 0.15% cream. Although Warticon cream is reported to have slightly lower efficacy, it is also reported to be easier to apply to intimate areas compared with Warticon solution and may offer better tolerability. In summary, both Warticon cream and solution offer a high level of efficacy in the treatment of genital warts.

My skin is irritated following the use of Warticon. What should I do?

Warticon can cause local irritation to the area it has been applied to. Irritation may occur following the second or third day of application. Irritation will decrease after Warticon treatment is discontinued following advice. Oftentimes, the reaction to Warticon treatments are mild. If you do experience severe local skin reactions (itching, burning, excessive pain, swelling, bleeding) the Warticon cream or solution should be washed immediately from the treatment area with mild soapy water. Following this, treatment should be discontinued and you should seek advice from your GP or local GUM (Genito-Urinary Medicine) clinic.

Will I see faster results if I use Warticon cream or solution more often than recommended?

No. It is important to use Warticon cream or solution exactly as advised. Excess use of Warticon cream or solution (or prolonged contact with the skin) may lead to a severe reaction at the application area.

Excessive application may cause severe systemic toxicity, including gastrointestinal, renal, haematological and central nervous system effect.

After applying Warticon, should I cover the treated area with a dressing?

Occlusive dressing is not recommended or required following the application of Warticon.

What are the alternatives to Warticon treatments?

Aldara cream is an alternative treatment to Warticon cream and solution. Aldara cream works in a slightly different way to Warticon, it contains the active ingredient imiquimod, which supports the immune system to help fight the HPV and clear genital warts.

How does the efficacy of Warticon cream and solution compare to Aldara cream?

The active ingredient in Warticon 0.15% cream and 0.5% solution is podophyllotoxin and the active ingredient in Aldara cream is imiquimod 5%. Research reports that despite the lower concentration and marginally lower efficacy, podophyllotoxin 0.15% cream has a very similar efficacy to the 0.5% solution and may offer easier application and better tolerability. Research also indicates that the efficacy of podophyllotoxin 0.5% solution and imiquimod 5% are very similar and equally beneficial in the treatment of genital warts.

One of the main differences between Warticon and Aldara is that podophyllotoxin is reported to work faster (works in 4 weeks) compared to imiquimod (takes up to 16 weeks to work), however, imiquimod is suggested to be more effective at preventing long term recurrence of genital warts due to its immune response mode of action. In summary, both Warticon solution and Aldara cream have the highest level of efficacy, however, Warticon cream has a very similar level of efficacy and is considered a suitable alternative.

How does Warticon differ to Aldara cream?

  • Warticon treatments are typically less expensive than Aldara cream.
  • Warticon contains the active ingredient podophyllotoxin, whereas, Aldara cream is an immune response modifier.
  • Warticon may be less effective at preventing the recurrence of an outbreak than Aldara cream in the long term.
  • Warticon may be faster to take effect (takes up to 4 weeks to work) compared to Aldara cream (takes up to 16 weeks to work).
