Dr Wolff's V-san Lactic Acid Pessaries Product Information

Dr Wolff's V-san Lactic Acid Pessaries are vaginal pessaries that contain lactic acid and sodium lactate, which work together to maintain and restore the natural acidity (pH levels) of the vagina. They are designed to support a healthy vaginal environment in women who are prone to recurrent vaginal infections.

Dr Wolff's V-san Lactic Acid Pessaries are not a medicine and do not contain any antibiotic or antifungal ingredients. They have been gynaecologically tested and are free from preservatives, colourants, fragrances and animal-derived ingredients.

Dr Wolff's V-san Lactic Acid Pessaries are used to help maintain and restore the natural pH of the vagina, which normally sits between pH 3.8 and 4.4. Keeping the vaginal environment within this acidic range helps to support the natural balance of bacteria and reduce the risk of recurrent vaginal infections.

They are intended for women who are prone to repeated infections, in particular recurrent bacterial vaginosis where a "fishy" smelling discharge tends to return after a period or after sex. Dr Wolff's V-san Lactic Acid Pessaries can also be used to support the vaginal environment after, or alongside, prescribed treatment for a vaginal infection, provided they are used according to the product instructions and not at the same time as other vaginal products unless advised by a healthcare professional.

A healthy vagina is naturally acidic, and this acidity provides a form of natural protection against infections. Dr Wolff's V-san Lactic Acid Pessaries work by releasing lactic acid, which quickly acidifies the vaginal environment and adjusts it towards the normal pH range of 3.8 to 4.4. Factors such as menstruation, semen, a course of antibiotics or hormonal changes can push the pH above this range, which allows bacteria that can cause an infection to grow.

This acidic environment supports the growth of the beneficial lactic-acid-producing bacteria (Lactobacillus) that make up a large part of the natural vaginal flora, while making conditions less favourable for the organisms that can cause infection.

Insert one pessary as deep into the vagina as possible in the evening before going to bed, ideally lying on your back with your legs slightly drawn up. The pessary is easier to insert if it is first moistened under running water. Wash your hands before and after each use.

As the pessaries dissolve and can cause an increased watery discharge, it is advisable to wear a panty liner. A course of treatment is usually 5 to 7 days. For longer-term support, one pessary can be used two to three times a week. Dr Wolff's V-san Lactic Acid Pessaries should not be used during your period, and they should not be used at the same time as other products applied inside the vagina, such as pessaries or vaginal gels. At least 24 hours should be left between the use of Dr Wolff’s V-san Lactic Acid Pessaries and other products applied inside the vagina.

If you use latex condoms, caps or diaphragms, it is important to be aware that Dr Wolff's V-san Lactic Acid Pessaries may weaken them. They do not contain spermicide, so they do not offer protection against pregnancy.

Dr Wolff's V-san Lactic Acid Pessaries: Our Pharmacist's Advice

"Lactic acid pessaries such as Dr Wolff's V-san Lactic Acid Pessaries can be a useful option for women who experience the same recurring vaginal infection, especially recurrent bacterial vaginosis that tends to flare after a period or after sex. By helping to keep the vaginal environment in its natural acidic range, they support the balance of bacteria that gives the vagina its own natural protection.

It is important to note that Dr Wolff's V-san Lactic Acid Pessaries are intended to help prevent infections from recurring. They do not treat an infection that is already present. If you are experiencing vaginal symptoms for the first time, or if symptoms persist despite treatment, speak to your pharmacist or GP so that the underlying cause can be confirmed. NHS guidance encourages anyone with a first episode of unusual discharge or odour to have it assessed before self-managing, and Dr Wolff's V-san Lactic Acid Pessaries are best used as part of that wider treatment rather than in place of it."

No. It is not beneficial to use Dr Wolff's V-san Lactic Acid Pessaries during your period, as menstrual blood raises the vaginal pH and would counteract the acidifying effect of the lactic acid. Start the pessaries after your period has finished. If you have already started a course when your period begins, stop using Dr Wolff's V-san Lactic Acid Pessaries and continue once your period has ended.

Yes. For women who are prone to recurrent bacterial infections, in particular the recurring "fishy" smelling discharge associated with bacterial vaginosis that tends to flare after sex or menstruation, using Dr Wolff's V-san Lactic Acid Pessaries can help to prevent the infection from returning by keeping the vaginal environment in its natural acidic range.

For ongoing prevention, one pessary can be used two to three times a week over a longer period. Dr Wolff's V-san Lactic Acid Pessaries are well tolerated and are suitable for long-term use.

Alongside maintaining a healthy vaginal pH, a balanced gut microbiome can also help support the body's natural flora. Our pharmacists recommend taking OneVit Probiotics Complex, which may help support a healthy balance of bacteria and, in turn, the natural defences that help reduce the risk of recurrent infections.

No. Dr Wolff's V-san Lactic Acid Pessaries are not a treatment for an active vaginal infection. They do not contain any antibiotic or antifungal ingredients, so they will not clear an existing episode of bacterial vaginosis or thrush. Their role is to help maintain the natural vaginal pH and to help prevent infections from recurring in women who are prone to them.

If you have an active infection, or if you are experiencing symptoms such as an unusual discharge, an unpleasant odour, or itching or burning for the first time, speak to a pharmacist or your GP so that the cause can be identified and treated appropriately. Because bacterial vaginosis and thrush are treated differently, it can help to know which one you have. Canestest is a self-test that helps identify whether your symptoms are more likely to be caused by bacterial vaginosis or thrush.

If thrush has been confirmed, our range of thrush treatments includes oral capsules such as Fluconazole and cream treatments such as Clotrimazole 1%. Dr Wolff's V-san Lactic Acid Pessaries can then be used to supplement that treatment and to help support the vaginal environment afterwards.

Dr Wolff's V-san Lactic Acid Pessaries are typically well tolerated and can be used during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. However, pregnant women who have vaginal symptoms are advised to speak to their doctor first, so that the cause of the symptoms can be checked.

Dr Wolff's V-san Lactic Acid Pessaries are generally well tolerated. As the pessaries are highly soluble, they commonly cause an increased watery discharge, which is why a panty liner is recommended. In rare cases, mild local irritation such as a temporary redness, burning or itching can occur, and very rarely an allergic reaction, including a severe allergic reaction, may develop.

If your symptoms worsen, or do not improve within 8 days, stop using the pessaries and speak to a pharmacist or your GP.

Do not use Dr Wolff's V-san Lactic Acid Pessaries if you are hypersensitive to any of their ingredients, and do not use them immediately after childbirth.

In addition, they should not be used during your period. If you currently have a vaginal infection, speak to a doctor before use so that your symptoms can be diagnosed and treated appropriately.

The active ingredients in Dr Wolff's V-san Lactic Acid Pessaries are lactic acid and sodium lactate. The other ingredients are the pessary base materials macrogol 1500 and macrogol 6000.

Each pessary contains 167mg of lactic acid and 100mg of sodium lactate solution, corresponding to a total of 190mg of water-free lactic acid. The pessaries are free from preservatives, colourants, fragrances and animal-derived substances. For full information, always read the Patient Information Leaflet supplied with the product.

The Dr Wolff's V-san range includes several different products for intimate health, and it is important to choose the one that matches your needs:

  • V-san Lactic Acid Pessaries help maintain the natural vaginal pH and help prevent recurrent vaginal infections.
  • V-san Moisturising Cream and V-san Moisturising Cremolum pessaries are designed to relieve vaginal dryness rather than to support pH.

If your main concern is recurrent infection and maintaining a healthy vaginal pH, Dr Wolff's V-san Lactic Acid Pessaries are the relevant product in the range. If your main concern is vaginal dryness, one of the moisturising products such as V-san Moisturising Cream may be more suitable for you.
