How does Calpol Infant Oral Suspension work?

Paracetamol is the active ingredient in Calpol Infant Oral Suspension, and it works in the same way it does when adults take it. The only difference is that, while adults take up to 1000mg of paracetamol to reduce fever and relieve pain, infants and young children can’t take as high a dose. The suspension in Calpol Infant only contains small amounts of paracetamol adequate for treating general symptoms of illness in children.

How long does Calpol Infant Oral Suspension take to work?

You should notice your child’s pain and fever reducing around 15 minutes after administering the medication.

Who can't use Calpol Infant Oral Suspension?

Calpol Infant Oral Suspension is suitable for babies and children aged two months to six years. You should not give Calpol to babies younger than two months. You should also not give Calpol to children who are allergic to paracetamol or any of the other ingredients in Calpol.

How do I use Calpol Infant Oral Suspension?

The amount of medicine you use depends on your child’s age. The easy dose syringe provided with the treatment should be used to administer the dose. Follow the guide below to work out how much is suitable for your child.

  • 6-24 months - 5mL up to four times a day
  • 2-4 years - 7.5mL up to four times a day
  • 4-6 years - 10mL up to four times a day
