What is Valtrex and how does it treat genital herpes?

Valtrex is an antiviral medication used to treat current and future outbreaks of genital herpes (Herpes Simplex Virus 1 or 2) in adults. Valtrex contains the active ingredient Valaciclovir and is effective at stopping the herpes simplex virus from reproducing. Valtrex should be taken as soon as the first symptoms develop to effectively suppress the herpes virus as early as possible.

How do I take Valtrex?

You should take Valtrex to treat a herpes outbreak at a dose of one tablet of 500mg taken twice daily, for five days (swallow with water). For the first outbreak of genital herpes, it is recommended to extend the treatment to 10 days.

For suppressing genital herpes, take one Valtrex tablet of 500mg per day. Make sure you remain hydrated throughout treatment as the effects of Valaciclovir are quite harsh on the kidneys.

How effective is Valtrex?

Valtrex significantly reduces the duration of pain and discomfort caused by genital herpes. Valtrex is effective at clearing the symptoms quickly and effectively. Furthermore, it reduces risk of transmission of genital herpes when taken as suppressive therapy in combination with using barrier methods for safe sexual intercourse. Valtrex is also effective at treating cold sores and other HSV infections of the skin.

What is the difference between Valtrex and Generic Valaciclovir?

Valtrex and Generic Valaciclovir are medically equivalent in strength and efficacy. However, as Valtrex is the branded version of Generic Valaciclovir, it is consequently more expensive.
