Walking might be the most underrated tool you've got on Wegovy or Mounjaro. It's free, it's low-impact and it can be a way to still be active on days where your energy is low or you're feeling rough.
So how many steps a day to lose weight on a GLP-1 medicine? Probably fewer than you think, and when you walk can matter almost as much as how far.
This guide covers why walking suits these medicines so well, realistic step and time targets. What brisk walking actually means, the case for a walk after meals, and how to use walking as a jump-off into the rest of your training.
You don't need a gym, a plan or any kit to start. A pair of comfy shoes and some spare time is all you need.
Why does walking work so well on GLP-1 medicines?
Both Wegovy and Mounjaro are licensed for weight loss alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1,2 The medicine helps with the eating side. Moving more is still up to you.
Walking ticks a lot of boxes here. Brisk walking can help build stamina, burn calories and make your heart healthier.3 It doesn't need any skill or equipment, and it's gentle on your joints compared to running.
It also flexes around how you feel. Side effects like tiredness and feeling sick are common on these medicines, especially early on.1,2 On a rough day, a hard gym session might be off the table, but a short walk usually isn't.
And every bit counts. The NHS says even a brisk 10-minute daily walk counts towards your 150 minutes of weekly activity.3
Walking is the one form of exercise you can scale up or down to match how you feel that day, which makes it ideal while your body adjusts.
How many steps a day to lose weight?
You've probably heard 10,000 steps a day quoted as the target. It's a nice round number, but there's actually little evidence behind it.4
A large analysis of 15 studies looked at daily steps and health. It found the risk of dying early kept falling as steps went up, before levelling off at around 6,000 to 8,000 steps a day for adults aged 60 and over, and around 8,000 to 10,000 a day for younger adults.4 That study looked at long-term health rather than weight loss, but it shows that the benefits start well before 10,000.
How many steps a day should you aim for then? Honestly, there's no single magic number. Steps help you burn more energy, but your medicine and your diet are doing much of the heavy lifting. The best target is one you can realistically stick to and gradually build on.
An easy way to get things going:
- Find your baseline - check your phone or watch for your average daily steps over the last week.
- Add a little at a time - aim for around 1,000 extra steps a day, and hold that for a week or two before adding more.
- Work towards 7,000 to 10,000 - for most adults, this is a sensible range to build up to over time.
Not a fan of counting steps? Think in minutes instead. The NHS recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, ideally spread over 4 to 5 days or more.5 That's 30 minutes of brisk walking, 5 days a week.
Going from 3,000 to 5,000 steps a day is real progress. Compare yourself with last month, rather than just the numbers on your watch or app.
What counts as brisk walking?
Brisk walking is about 3 miles an hour, which is faster than a stroll.3 There's an easy test for it too. If you can still talk but couldn't sing the words to a song, you're walking briskly.3
That's the pace that counts as moderate activity. It's the one to aim for most of the time, but you don't have to hit it every day. On low-energy days, a slower walk still gets you moving and still adds to your step count.
Want to make walks harder without running? Try hills, stairs or an incline on a treadmill. You'll work harder at the same speed.
Why walk after you eat?
When you walk can make a difference, not just how much. In one study, 41 adults with type 2 diabetes were asked to walk for 10 minutes after each main meal, or for 30 minutes once a day. Their blood sugar after meals was around 12% lower when they walked after eating.6 The biggest effect came after the evening meal.
That study was in people with type 2 diabetes, so the results may not apply in the same way to everyone. But it's a simple habit, and it's an easy way to fit in three short walks without finding a big chunk of time.
Ten minutes on your feet after your biggest meal of the day is one of the simplest habits you can build.
There's one GLP-1 specific twist. Mounjaro slows down how quickly your stomach empties,7 and slower stomach emptying is listed as a possible side effect of Wegovy too.2 So straight after a meal, keep it to a gentle stroll rather than a power walk. Many people find a slow walk more comfortable than slumping on the sofa after eating.
If you have diabetes and use insulin or a sulphonylurea, your risk of low blood sugar is higher with a GLP-1 medicine.1 Speak to your diabetes team before changing how much or when you exercise.
Walking on injection days and low-energy days
Some days will feel harder than others, especially around your injection or after a dose increase. On those days, lower the bar rather than skipping movement altogether.
- Split it up - three 10-minute walks can be easier than one 30-minute walk.
- Slow it down - a gentle pace still counts towards your daily steps.
- Stay close to home - pick a short loop with places to stop or sit down.
- Take water - and sip it as you go, especially on warmer days.
Being sick or having diarrhoea can leave you dehydrated, so drinking enough fluids really matters on these medicines.2 Feeling dizzy is a common side effect of both medicines.1,2 If you're prone to it, try to have someone with you on walks and avoid being too far from home until you know how your body responds.
Do not keep walking if you feel faint, very dizzy or sick. Stop, sit down somewhere safe and sip some water.

Walking is your starting point, not your ceiling
Walking is a brilliant foundation. But on its own, it isn't enough. The NHS recommends strength exercises that work all your major muscles on at least 2 days a week, on top of your aerobic activity.5
That matters even more on a GLP-1 medicine. When you lose weight, some of it can come from muscle. We explain why in our guide to GLP-1 medicines and muscle loss. Strength training is one of the best ways to protect it.
Here's a simple way to build up:

Think of walking as the base layer. Strength training on top is what helps protect your muscle while the weight comes off.
When should you check with a GP before walking more?
New chest pain or breathlessness on a walk needs checking. Stop and get medical help rather than trying to push through it.
Walking is safe for most people. But it's worth speaking to your GP or prescriber first if:
- You have a heart or lung condition, or you get chest pain or unusual breathlessness when you're active
- You have joint pain that gets worse when you walk
- You take insulin or a sulphonylurea for diabetes
- You often feel dizzy or light-headed
If you get chest pain, feel very short of breath or feel faint during a walk, stop straight away and get medical help.
Frequently asked questions
Is 10,000 steps a day enough to lose weight?
There's nothing special about 10,000. Research suggests the health benefits of walking start well before it, levelling off at around 6,000 to 8,000 steps a day for adults over 60 and 8,000 to 10,000 for younger adults. For weight loss, steps work alongside your diet and medicine. Pick a target you can sustain and build up gradually.
Is walking good for weight loss?
Yes, walking can help. Brisk walking burns calories, builds stamina and is good for your heart. On a GLP-1 medicine, it's an easy way to add the increased physical activity your treatment is meant to go alongside. For the best results, pair it with strength exercises on at least 2 days a week to help protect your muscle.
What are the benefits of walking after eating?
A short walk after meals may help lower blood sugar after eating. In one study of adults with type 2 diabetes, walking for 10 minutes after each main meal led to lower post-meal blood sugar than one 30-minute walk a day. On a GLP-1 medicine, keep post-meal walks gentle, as your stomach empties more slowly.
Is walking or running better for weight loss?
The best one is the one you'll keep doing. Running counts as vigorous activity, so it gets you to your weekly target faster: the NHS says 75 minutes of vigorous activity gives similar benefits to 150 minutes of moderate. But walking is easier on your joints and simpler to fit around side effects like nausea and tiredness.
Can you lose weight on Wegovy without exercise?
Wegovy is designed to be used alongside a reduced-calorie meal plan and increased physical activity, so exercise is part of the treatment rather than an extra. Being active also helps in ways the scales don't show, from protecting muscle to supporting heart health. Walking is one of the simplest ways to start, even on low-energy days.
