Wegovy semaglutide tablets are expected to arrive in the UK very soon, raising one big question for anyone considering them: what will they cost?

Been looking into Wegovy semaglutide tablets as a needle-free weight loss option? You've probably wondered how much they'll cost in the UK.

Wegovy semaglutide tablets were approved by the MHRA on 11 June 2026. At the time of approval, Novo Nordisk hadn't published a UK list price.

This guide covers what we know about expected UK pricing based on international benchmarks, how the tablet compares with the injection on cost, and what your options are.

Price is only part of the picture. The right option also depends on your health, your routine and what you can stick with.

Is Wegovy available as a tablet in the UK?

Yes. Wegovy semaglutide tablets were approved by the MHRA on 11 June 2026, making the UK the first country in Europe to license an oral GLP-1 for weight management. NHS access needs a separate NICE cost-effectiveness review, and isn't expected before 2027.

It's worth clearing up a common source of confusion. Rybelsus is an oral semaglutide tablet that's been available in the UK for years, but it's licensed only for type 2 diabetes, at doses up to 9mg in its current formulation.

The Wegovy tablet is a different, higher-dose product made specifically for weight management, at 25mg, and it's licensed for that use.

How much will Wegovy semaglutide tablets cost in the UK?

No UK price had been announced at the time of approval. A UK list price is expected to follow the commercial launch.

The most useful reference point is the US launch pricing. The Wegovy pill launched in the United States in January 2026 through Novo Nordisk's NovoCare Pharmacy programme. Self-pay pricing started at around $149 a month for the lowest doses, rising to $299 a month for the 25mg maintenance dose.

Converted at current exchange rates, that would put the lower doses at roughly £110 to £120 a month, and the maintenance dose at around £220 to £230 a month. These figures are a rough guide only.

UK prices tend to reflect local manufacturing, distribution and market factors, so what you actually pay at UK pharmacies could be higher or lower.

In the US, the Wegovy injection has a list price of over $1,300 a month without insurance, while the tablet launched at $299 for the maintenance dose. Whether a similar gap appears in the UK remains to be seen.

UK pricing for other oral GLP-1 tablets is still emerging. Foundayo (orforglipron), Eli Lilly's oral GLP-1 tablet, was authorised by the MHRA on 10 August 2026, but UK pricing hasn't been confirmed and it isn't yet available to buy through Pharmica.

Ask for the price of each dose step before you start, so there are no surprises as your dose goes up.

How does the expected cost compare to the Wegovy injection?

If UK tablet pricing follows a similar pattern to the US, the tablet's maintenance dose could cost about the same as the injection, or slightly less.

Both forms also start at a lower dose and build up over several months. So you're likely to pay less in the early stages of treatment than once you're on the maintenance dose.

It's also worth comparing results. In the OASIS 4 trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, people taking oral semaglutide 25mg once a day lost an average of 13.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks, including those who stopped treatment.1 Among those who stuck fully with treatment, the average was 16.6%.1

The Wegovy injection (semaglutide 2.4mg weekly) has shown average weight loss of around 15% in clinical trials,2 so the two lead to broadly similar results, with some individual variation.

If cost is your main concern, both options are likely to sit in a similar monthly price range. The choice between them is likely to come down to personal preference, dosing routine and clinical suitability, rather than price alone.

Do not switch between the injection and tablets on your own to save money. Your prescriber needs to set the right dose.

Will Wegovy semaglutide tablets be available on the NHS?

NHS coverage needs a separate assessment by NICE, to check the tablet is cost-effective for the NHS. This usually takes several months after MHRA approval.

The Wegovy injection only received NHS approval for specialist weight management services in 2023, and access is still limited.3 So most industry observers think NHS access to the tablet before 2027 is unlikely.

In Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, prescribing guidance comes from their own bodies (SMC, AWMSG and NICPLD), which carry out their own assessments separately from NICE.

On an NHS waiting list for a specialist weight management service? It's worth asking your clinician whether the tablet could be a suitable alternative to the injection for you.

What weight loss tablet options are available now?

Alongside Wegovy, a few other options are available in the UK.

Orlistat

Orlistat is a licensed oral weight loss medicine. It blocks around a third of the fat you eat from being absorbed. You take it three times a day with meals, and it's available on the NHS for eligible patients.

Unlike semaglutide, it doesn't act on your appetite or the GLP-1 pathway. Instead, it cuts the calories your body absorbs from fat. It's one of the most established oral weight loss medicines in the UK.

Rybelsus (oral semaglutide)

Rybelsus is an oral semaglutide tablet licensed in the UK for type 2 diabetes. It isn't licensed for weight management, though some people prescribed it for diabetes notice weight loss as a side benefit. It shouldn't be sought for weight loss outside its licensed use.

Wegovy injection

The Wegovy injectable pen is the MHRA-approved semaglutide injection for weight management in the UK. It contains the same active ingredient as the tablet and leads to similar results.

Do not buy semaglutide from unregulated sellers. Only use a registered UK pharmacy or prescriber.

How to be notified when Wegovy tablets are available in the UK

Visit our Wegovy oral tablet page for the latest availability. If you're eligible and ready to start treatment, our clinical team can also check whether the Wegovy injection or another option suits you.

When to seek medical advice

Whether you're considering the Wegovy tablet, the Wegovy injection or any other prescription weight loss treatment, a clinical assessment is the right starting point. A clinician will review your BMI, health history and current medicines before recommending a treatment and dose.

Self-prescribing or buying semaglutide from unregulated sources carries serious safety risks.

Contact your GP or a registered prescribing clinician if you:

  • Have a history of pancreatitis, thyroid conditions, or a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma
  • Are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding
  • Are taking other medications that may interact with semaglutide
  • Are already using another semaglutide-containing product, such as Ozempic or Rybelsus

Frequently asked questions

How much will Wegovy semaglutide tablets cost in the UK?

No official UK price has been confirmed yet. The MHRA approved the tablet on 11 June 2026, and a UK list price is expected to be published when it commercially launches, which Novo Nordisk anticipates will be within weeks. Based on US launch pricing, the maintenance dose is expected to cost in the region of £220–£230 per month at private pharmacies, with lower starting doses likely costing less.

When will Wegovy tablets be available in the UK?

Wegovy semaglutide tablets were approved by the MHRA on 11 June 2026. Novo Nordisk expects the tablet to be available by private prescription within weeks of that decision. NHS access requires a separate NICE appraisal and is not expected before 2027.

Will Wegovy semaglutide tablets be cheaper than the injection?

Possibly. In the US, the Wegovy tablet launched at a significantly lower price than the injectable version. Whether that pattern holds in the UK is not yet confirmed, but the two formulations are expected to sit in a broadly comparable monthly price range.

Are Wegovy tablets available on the NHS?

Not yet, and they are not expected to be before 2027 at the earliest. Even after MHRA approval, a separate NICE cost-effectiveness review would be required before NHS prescribing guidance could be issued.

What is the difference between Wegovy tablets and Rybelsus?

Rybelsus is licensed in the UK for type 2 diabetes at doses up to 9mg. The Wegovy tablet is a higher-dose formulation (25mg) developed specifically for weight management, approved by the MHRA on 11 June 2026.

How effective are Wegovy semaglutide tablets for weight loss?

In the Phase 3 OASIS 4 trial, participants taking oral semaglutide 25mg once daily lost an average of 13.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks. With full treatment adherence, mean weight loss reached 16.6%. Around one in three participants achieved 20% or more weight loss.

What oral weight loss tablets are available in the UK right now?

Orlistat is the main licensed oral weight loss medicine currently available in the UK, and it can be prescribed on the NHS for eligible patients. The Wegovy injection is also available by private prescription for those who want to start semaglutide treatment now.

Can I use Rybelsus for weight loss in the UK?

No. Rybelsus is licensed in the UK only for managing blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It's not licensed for weight management and should not be sought for that purpose outside its approved indication.
