Relieve temporary insomnia with these popular, effective sleeping aids.

What is Nytol?

Nytol is an over-the-counter sleeping aid that contains the active ingredient diphenhydramine.

What is Nytol used for?

This medication is used to treat temporary sleeping difficulties, which is defined as any period of sleeplessness lasting up to two weeks.

How does Nytol work?

Diphenhydramine, the active ingredient in Nytol, is an antihistamine used primarily to treat allergies. When used to treat allergies, however, a common side effect of diphenhydramine is drowsiness. Thanks to its sedative properties, diphenhydramine is a widely-used medication for the treatment of temporary sleeplessness.

Does Nytol work?

Nytol is proven to be effective at helping users with temporary insomnia fall asleep, enjoy a deeper sleep and wake up in the morning feeling rested.

How long does Nytol take to work?

You should begin to feel drowsy rather quickly once you’ve taken Nytol - around 20-30 minutes after your dose. For that reason, it is best to take Nytol 20 minutes before you go to bed.

How long does Nytol last?

The effects of Nytol will last between four and six hours after taking it. However, it is common for users to feel some level of drowsiness the day after taking it. If you still feel drowsy after waking up, you should not drive or use tools or machines.

How should I take Nytol?

That depends on which dose you have. For Nytol One-A-Night, one tablet should be taken orally 20 minutes before you plan to go to bed. If you have Nytol Original, two tablets should be taken orally 20 minutes before bed.

Does Nytol have side effects?

Generally, the side effects of Nytol relate to drowsiness. Users can feel tired, unsteady, dizzy or find it difficult to concentrate after taking it. Additionally, users may also experience dry mouth after taking Nytol.

Is Nytol safe?

Generally speaking, Nytol is safe to use on a short-term basis to relieve temporary insomnia. However, the treatment should only be used for a continuous period of up to two weeks. If sleeplessness continues after two weeks, you should see your GP to investigate. In addition, you must consult your GP or a pharmacist before taking Nytol if you have:

  • Asthma, bronchitis or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • A narrow-angle glaucoma
  • An enlarged prostate or urinary retention
  • Moderate to severe liver or kidney disease
  • Myasthenia gravis, epilepsy or seizure disorders

You should never use Nytol if you have had an allergic reaction to diphenhydramine hydrochloride or any of the other ingredients in the medication. You should also never use Nytol if you have an obstruction in your stomach or gut.

Can you overdose on Nytol?

Yes. An overdose of Nytol may result in extreme drowsiness, blurred vision, rapid heart rate, confusion, seizures, hallucinations and coma. An overdose of Nytol is very dangerous and if you experience any of these symptoms, or have taken too much, you must dial 999 or go straight to your local A&E.

What if I forget to take Nytol?

If you miss a dose of Nytol one evening, you should not make up for it the next evening by taking two. Simply take the dose as normal the next time you plan to go to bed.

What is the difference between Nytol Original and Nytol One-A-Night?

Both contain the same active ingredient, but come in different doses. Nytol Original contains 25mg of diphenhydramine, while One-A-Night contains 50mg.

What is the difference between Nytol Original/One-A-Night and Nytol Herbal Simply Sleep?

Both treatments have different active ingredients. While Nytol Original/One-A-Night contains the active ingredient diphenhydramine, Nytol Herbal Simply Sleep instead uses valerian root extract. Valerian root extract, which comes from the valerian herb, is commonly used to treat sleep disorders, anxiety and psychological stress.

Can I drink alcohol with Nytol?

Like Nytol, alcohol is a sedative and can make you drowsy. For that reason, it is not safe to drink alcohol while taking Nytol.

Can I take Nytol while pregnant?

It is generally safe to take Nytol while pregnant, but you should always check with your GP before using it.

Can diabetics take Nytol?

Nytol is not inherently dangerous for diabetics to take. However, if you are taking other medications for any long-term condition you must see your GP before using it.

How should I store Nytol?

Nytol should be stored in a cool, dry place, and out of sight or reach of children.
